A roof the whole town watched go on.

This one sits on a corner in downtown Bellefontaine — a handsome early-century building in buff brick with a broad hipped roof, deep boxed eaves, and dormers on three elevations. It is the kind of building people in this town have driven past their entire lives without ever really looking at it. They looked at it in June.

Residential work happens in a driveway. This happened on a public sidewalk, on a through street, beside a parking lot people needed all day. Tear-off had to be tarped and contained rather than simply dropped. Ladders and staging had to leave the walk passable. Material had to be delivered without closing a lane for longer than it took to unload.

And the whole thing was visible. On a residential roof, a slow morning is between you and the homeowner. On a downtown corner it is between you and everyone driving to work.

A hipped roof with dormers is deceptive from the street. From above it resolves into a lot of separate planes meeting at a lot of different angles — every dormer adds two valleys and a saddle, and every valley is a place where water is being asked to make a decision.

The dried-in photos in this case study show the whole roof under ABC ProGuard synthetic underlayment before a single shingle went down. That is the stage most contractors never photograph, and it is the stage where the work is actually decided.

The scope also included new gutters and downspouts, which on a commercial building is not a cosmetic afterthought. Deep eaves throw a lot of water, and a downtown building sheds it onto public sidewalk. Undersized or badly pitched gutter on a corner like this becomes somebody else's icy walk in January.

Commercial work in your own downtown is the most public audition a local contractor gets. Every business owner on that block watched how the crew showed up, how the site looked at six in the evening, and how long the scaffolding stayed. That is worth more than any advertisement, and it is the reason we take the visible jobs.
